Mascot Lives Outside The Box, Wins Run The Walk Award

This past weekend we were at New Mexico watching the state tournament. Our Sole purpose for going was to find players who ran the walk and give them the “go all out be all in award”.

We were happy to see that there were several players that could have won this award in each division, and although it made the decision hard on our end, we were pleased to see so many players giving all that they had for their respective teams.

Ricky

Ricky was someone we had absolutely no intention of stumbling upon.  His Dance, Smile, and way he lit up the pit like no one else, was something we could not go without applauding.  Ricky helped boost spirits as he cheered elida on to the state championship.

Ben Romero- Senior, Los Lunas HS.

Ben Romero fell short on his goal this year with the Los Lunas Tigers, but one thing he didn’t fall short on was his efforts on attaining his ultimate goal. Ben is a RUN THE WALK player who went all out this year for his team. While we watched Ben go up and down the court, it dawned on us that there was never a play that we felt he took off.  Now if that’s not an example of running the walk, I don’t know what is. The defense displayed was a thing if beauty. Help side, closing out, attempted charges, being in the passing lane; too only mention a few. Ben never stopped striving for perfection during the game.

NMSTATE 014

Micah Murphy- Senior, Hope HS.

Micah Murphy didn’t take one shot during his championship game, yet he made the biggest impact towards helping his team raise the championship banner.  His intensity on defense was unreal.  Micah was the first one to hit the floor for a loose ball.  He took multiple charges, and his on the ball pressure was unbelievable.  He kept his poise, handled defensive pressure and always found the open teammate.  He did everything you would want from a great point guard and then some.

Kai Williams-  Senior /Trevor Noel- Senior/Joseph Garza- Senior, Las Cruces HS.

Kai Williams, Trevor Noel, and Joseph Garza shocked us during the 5A championship game.  It was not the fact that they were not suppose to be there playing in that game.  It wasn’t the fact that they showed up to play and did every thing they could to win either.  It was the fact that all three of them played at such a high level it was hard to determine who should get the Run The Walk award.

Kai was a smooth operator.  He did everything from single handedly breaking the press, to posting up in the paint and finishing.  There wasn’t a player that could hang with Trevor’s ability to get all the loose balls and beat every big man up the court.  His determination helped fuel the team in clutch situations.

Joseph was the guard that every coach wants to coach.  Really handled pressure well, knocked down big time shots, and played relentlessly on the defensive end.  He covered so much ground it looked like there was multiples of him out on the court.

The three of them played so well we had to give all of them the award.  When you see that many play like that on one team, you have to tip your hat to the head coach, William Benjamin.

Nic Stafford Wins Run The Walk Award

This past weekend we were at New Mexico watching the state tournament. Our Sole purpose for going was to find players who ran the walk and give them the “go all out be all in award”.

NMSTATE 015

Nic Stafford- Senior, St. Pius X HS.

Nic Stafford was a solid player.  After witnessing how he dominated in the paint, with every kind of move you can think of, and grabbing any loose ball and rebound around him; there was no question that this guy was the difference maker for his team.

NMSTATE 003

Natalie Zamora- Sophomore, St. Pius X HS.

Natalie Zamora is a player who electrifies the crowd with her ability.  She amazed us with her determination and passion.  When asked what she was going to do the rest of the day, she replied “going to go to the gym to work on what needs to be done so I don’t have this feeling again”.  Her commitment to the game is better than most, and she is just a sophomore.

NMSTATE 012

Teige Zeller- Junior, Los Lunas HS.

Teige Zeller was someone who catches a coaches eye within a second of watching her play.  She is a tall and strong player. But that is not the only reason she would catch the eyes of A coach; When you saw a loose ball, chances were that she was there first, and any chance of a shot coming off of the rim, Teige was there to scoop it up.  She nabbed a tourney high 26 rebounds in one game alone, and was the main force to helping Los Lunas bring home a blue trophy.

Austin Jones- Senior, Laguna Acoma HS.

Austin Jones was someone that stuck out to us instantly.  There was something about this guys hustle that left all of us in aww. The ability to get loose balls is one thing, but when you also add in that he finished almost everything around the rim, and made key plays towards the end of the game; it was obvious that he was playing at a higher level than everyone else out there.

Danni Williams Wins Run The Walk Award

NMSTATE 016

Danni Williams-  Sophomore, Clovis HS.

Danni Williams was a special player to watch.  Her talents for being a sophomore were impressive, but when she got smacked in the face which lead to a steal and A wide open lay up for the opposing team; Danni’s reaction to that incident along with her effort was what let us know that her talent was good, but she is destined for greatness.  Following the smack to the face, she simply shook it off and hustled to the bench for the timeout. She never said one thing to anyone about the incident. No complaint to the ref, no excuse to the coach, she simply gained her composure and refocused her energy on the task at hand. And that was helping her team  win a state championship.

Cori Haley- Senior, Lovington HS.

Cori Haley never seemed to get rattled. Her  poise, mixed with her vocal leadership allowed for her teammates to keep their composure and handle any obstacle they faced throughout the game. Cori is A talented athlete, so much so that she will be attending West Texas A&M on a volleyball scholarship. Her talents, although legitimate, take a back seat to the leadership ability she possesses.  Good luck to Cori in the future. We have no doubt that you will continue to run the walk.
